Description

The Cathedral Builders

This course looks at England’s great medieval cathedrals, such as Durham, Salisbury, Wells, Lincoln, and Gloucester. As well as looking at their often breathtaking architecture, it explores how craftsmen with relatively basic tools could construct structures such as Salisbury’s towering steeple, the amazing octagonal lantern of Ely, and Gloucester’s dazzling vaulting. The achievements of the artists who adorned these buildings, from the glaziers who produced York’s glowing stained-glass to the carvers of Exeter and Wells, are also covered.
