Description

This continuing series of standalone day courses considers European history in the round.

This course considers Europe at the cusp of the 18th century. The Glorious Revolution had brought William of Orange as co-regnant to the English throne and with him the inevitable re-engagement in European affairs. Principal amongst these was the containment of Bourbon ambitions both within Europe and later, by virtue of the Spanish Succession, onto a worldwide canvas.

This European involvement continued with the German connection of the Georgian monarchs. Thus it was that newly United Kingdom of Great Britain was drawn into European wars invariably against France. This extended to mercantile competition and military action in both North America and India culminating in the Seven Years War.

All of this was played out in an era where concepts of individual freedom were beginning to challenge de facto despotic governance across much of the continent.

The series can be booked as a whole with a discount or as separate courses.

Tutor information

Mike Shaw was a regular soldier for over 30 years and has been a keen student of history all his life. A regular contributor to the Dillington programme, he has an interest in the history of the continent as a whole, particularly where western and slavic cultures have been impacted. A frequent independent traveller through the whole continent, he explores how trading networks flourished from the earliest times despite the countervailing demands of religion and tribal security. He offers rare insights into how historical perspectives have influenced more recent events. More importantly however, it is the way he tells the story.
