Description

Alexander II was grandfather to Nicholas II, the last of Russia’s Tsars.  He introduced the first Glasnost or thawing of Russian absolutism, but rather than making things better it made them worse.  Alexander survived at least seven assassination attempts.  He was a passionate man who knew great love and left a broken-hearted young widow.

This talk traces political events through the many attempts on Alexander’s life.  It offers illuminating background for anyone with an interest in the 1917 Russian Revolution.

Includes lunch. Lunch is served from 1pm and lecture begins at 2pm.

Sheila Seymour:  After a career in IT, from 2004 I was a tutor to the First Year History students at Royal Holloway College, University of London. My role was to introduce them to new aspects of, and approaches to, history after years of following tightly structured curricula. It was a wonderful job – but demanding. It was not only the students whose love of history was stimulated, and I look forward to sharing my experiences.
