Understanding Photography – Development of Photographic Skills.

This is an evening course of ten sessions. This course combines theory and practice to promote individual development within a group environment. Students will work on their chosen subject, with regular support, enabling you to achieve their goal. You will learn how to critically evaluate your own work and others for continuous technical and artistic improvement. Each week will build your skills and confidence. By the end of the course students will be able to create a digital photo book, print individual images or progress further by entering for a qualification with the Royal Photographic Society.

Monday 14 September 2020 1. ‘Ways of Seeing’ elements of composition to a make a great picture.
Monday 28 September 2020 Session 2. Using different cameras and lenses (from a phone to a DSLR camera)
Monday 12 October 2020 Session 3. Camera metering – speed, aperture & iso relationships
Monday 26 October 2020 Session 4. Understanding different exposures & histograms
Monday 9 November 2020 Session 5. How to control focus & depth of field
Monday 23 November 2020 Session 6. Switching to manual (part 1)
Monday 7 December 2020 Session 7. Switching to manual (part 2)
Monday 4 January 2021 Session 8. Overall digital workflow & basic editing (part 1)
Monday 18 January 2021 Session 9. Basic editing (part 2)
Monday 1 February 2021 Session 10. Basic digital colour management – get the colours right for print or web


Tutor information

Nick is a former student of Ron Frampton FRPS, an award-winning photographer, who lectured in photography at Dillington House for nearly thirty years. Nick holds a BA (Hons) Commercial Photography, MA (Photography) and is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and a member of the Association for Historical and Fine Art Photography (AFHAP).

Nick is a freelance photographer, recent projects include working for Art UK photographing sculpture in museums and private collections and for the Royal Navy recording the restoration of the RN ship figureheads at Devonport (the exhibition of which opens at The Box, Plymouth in May 2020).

Nick has established a close working relationship with the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and Plymouth College of Art (PCA) who will both be adding to the courses offered at Dillington House
Nick’s ethos of, simple solutions for a great image, underpins his practical approach to teaching.
