Come on a musical journey through the history of ragtime, blues, boogie-woogie and stride with renowned pianist Mike Denham and guest pianist Julian Phillips. Mike and Julian will illustrate at the keyboard and talk about what intrigues them about this music, plus find out more about influential titans of the genre such as Scott Joplin, Fats Waller and Jelly Roll Morton, to name but a few…

On Saturday, there will be an opportunity to watch together the 1998 Italian movie (English soundtrack) “The Legend of 1900”. This award –winning film stars Clarence Williams III, grandson of an early New Orleans jazz composer), as Jelly Roll Morton. It won Golden Globes for best foreign film and for Ennio Morricone’s score.

PLEASE NOTE: This residential course includes both the ‘Four piano styles of ragtime, blues, boogie-woogie and stride’ day course content on 4th March and also entry to the ‘Sunday Concert – Boogie-Woogie & Ragtime’ on 5th March.

Mike Denham is a fine solo pianist, with a tasteful and exciting repertoire of jazz from the early years of the 20th century.  He plays classic Joplin ragtime, the stomps of Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller, and popular songs by George Gershwin and Irving Berlin, as well as blues and boogie-woogie.  His concerts are seasoned with entertaining stories about these musicians and the colourful lives they led.

In a parallel career as a chemical engineer Mike led workshops on many different subjects – experience that has come in handy delivering successful courses at Dillington in recent years!
