The Great Gatsby Unmasked

Nick Caraway’s adventure into the New York world of money, mobsters and the alluring Daisy is a timeless classic rooted in the beginnings of today’s capitalism and this course will do it’s level best to uncover the truths that lay there for us in the 21st century. Looking at the novella in terms of language, structure and form as well as themes character and symbolism we will look for the sublime amongst Fitzgerald’s prose. There are reason’s this is one of the most loved of America’s writers and our weekend will be filled with all things Gatsby.

A weekend of rolling around (metaphorically) in this triumph of a novella, we will endeavour to discover the essence of Fitzgerald’s work and how it linked to his own life, his wife Zelda and the life they lived in New York, arguably an extra character in this ensemble cast. Language, structure & form will give us a sense of the mood but we will try an uncover what really makes this novella swing like no other book before it.
