Description

The fourth in our Cultural Craft series: Gingham Embroidered Tea Towels

A beginner’s day workshop, learning the basics of hand embroidery on Gingham fabric to embellish your very own tea towel. With an introduction to the history and culture of the time through a presentation, background music and a taste of historic recipes. In this workshop you will embellish a Gingham fabric tea towel, learning how to use basic embroidery stitches and techniques to create a ‘lace’ effect. You can personalise your design through the colours you choose. There will also be an introduction to the history, culture and development of Gingham embroidery, which was very popular during the depression period in America. This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners with little or no previous knowledge or experience of hand embroidery.

Tutor information

Rebecca has always been fascinated by the intricate details in life, particularly in art, historic costumes and textiles.

After studying (ND) Textiles and (BA Hons) Costume Interpretation, she realised that, although she loved learning the history behind period costumes and textile techniques, her favourite part of creating the costumes was the surface embellishment: primarily lacemaking, embroidery and beading.

After teaching in London for several years, she returned to Somerset to pursue what she is most passionate about – classes combining textile techniques with the history and culture behind them.

Rebecca hopes to help keep these alive for the next generation.
