Sunday Lecture – The Ideal Village. The History and Progress of Rural and Urban Villages from 1720 -2020
This lecture will examine the lengthy and often chequered history of the provision of housing and specialist developments, both rural and urban, from estate cottages to Port Sunlight to Portmeirion, from Silver End to The Living Village (The Wintles) at Bishops Castle.
As this talk will show, for over three hundred years people have been developing and evolving communities, from estate villages to philanthropic gestures from industrialists in the nineteenth century. The twentieth century right up to today has seen a continuing fascination and attempt to produce often radical departures from the norm. Yet little of the obvious developments and benefits appear in more mainstream building practice.
