Description

This course is part of Dillington Discovery Summer/Autumn week.

We know that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it? What exactly is the difference between drawing and painting? This workshop explores the gulf between drawing and painting and then seeks to build a bridge between the two disciplines. From studies in black and white, we will take a short step to the tonal properties of colour before exploring that magical moment when, as Francis Bacon said, “the image is the paint and vice-versa”.

All-comers welcome.

Monday & Tuesday – Pencil
From Da Vinci and Durer to Gehry and Gormley, invention, discovery and understanding begin with drawing. As children, when we pick up a crayon and draw, we discover a liberating and potent way to describe the world around us. Drawing is our first language with which we communicate our fantasies, our loves and fears, but over the years, something happens to persuade most of us that it is no longer of any value and we cease to make room for it in our lives.

Through drawing, however, we reconnect with the world around us, become more intimate with the things that matter to us and learn how to slow down in a fast-paced world. Topics covered: expressive mark-making, measurement, proportion, light and shade.

Monday & Tuesday – Non-resident fee £120.
