Description

In this introduction to the art of calligraphy,  the basic elements of design and writing with a broad-edged/chisel pen will be explored.

Calligraphy marker pens will be used initially while practising the patterns and individual strokes to form letters and numbers.  Metal nibs and quills will then be introduced using liquid ink and gouache paint.  A brief introduction to decoration and embellishment will also be introduced.

Students take home their own piece of calligraphy work and ideally,  will have thought about what they wish to write before attending.  Ideal for anyone who has an interest in a traditional, historical craft with attention to detail, with an interest in art and design or who enjoys spending time creating their own individual piece of work.

Suitable for beginners – no experience necessary.

Tutor information

Alison Bellringer first discovered her love of calligraphy as a young child when given a book on handwriting.  Captivated by all the different lettering styles, she would practise whenever she could, promising herself that one day she would accomplish what seemed impossible at such a young age.  Receiving requests to write various pieces, Alison continued to study the historical craft.  A favourite piece was the poem “In Flanders Fields” gifted to the Royal British Legion.  Besides commissioned work, she also runs workshops and loves to inspire others to try this historical art.
