Diaghilev’s Women: Four Women of Influence in a Man’s World
A ballerina, a choreographer, an artist and a patroness Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes was a roll call for early 20th Century creative talent – a remarkable company of dancers, composers, artists, writers, and chorographers. At a time when so many institutions were completely male-dominated, Diaghilev recruited strong women whom he admired, championed and relied upon.
This talk will look at four such women: the ballerina Tamara Karsavina, the ballerina/choreographer Bronislava Ninjinska. Her designer was Natalia Goncharova, a rising star within Moscow’s avant-garde movement. Finally there is Misia Sert described as ‘a collector of geniuses, all of them in love with her’. All four women are fascinating and their contribution to the Ballets Russes and beyond is incalculable.
We will explore each of these influential women through discussion, archive film clips and DVDs to illustrate.
