Monday to Wednesday – Pencil to Paint
Our relationship with art usually begins with a line, when we first take up a pencil or a crayon and scribble something on a piece of paper. In our enthusiasm, we may even attempt to colour it in, but for many of us, as we grow older and more critical, the results are often less than gratifying. The gulf between drawing (which we feel we understand) and painting (which we probably don’t) seems too great. We may know, by now, that a painting is more than just a coloured-in drawing, but how do we do it?  Why is it that so many of us (to paraphrase Picasso) end up with a blob of yellow paint instead of the sun? This three-day course bridges the gap between drawing and painting and sheds light on both disciplines so that we may move confidently from pencil to paint; from line to bold, bright colour.

Thursday & Friday – Sculpting with Colour
(finishes at lunch on Friday)
Many of us are quite at home with the business of working in two-dimensions. Drawing and painting, we feel, are things we understand, if only intuitively. But how might an artist, habituated to those two disciplines, approach sculpture? How do we move from creating in two dimensions to making in three? Isn’t it entirely different? And what happens to all the things we already know about art? Can we hold on to our beloved lines and colours, for example, or do we have to give them up? In this two-day course we will learn how to liberate our work from the wall and move it out into the environment. At the same time, a working knowledge of that tricky third dimension will give us deeper insights into the two we feel we already know.
