Performer background

Jessica Marie Quiñones’ childhood was spent in the New Mexican desert of the American Southwest, land of Georgia O’Keeffe, cowboys, alien sightings, and the Native American flute. She explains “The ‘ah- ha’ moment of my flute career came early, when I was only 16 and during a chance encounter playing Beethoven with Japanese musicians at a music conservatory on the remote island of Okinawa. This
rehearsal forever changed my outlook on my musicianship; it was then that I decided that being a musician meant I could transition into any global musical community with ease. From playing tango flute in Buenos Aires, to living in Ireland to soak up the ‘trad’ style, to touring India as a Bollywood flautist, to spending time in Portugal to experience the fado first-hand, my career has extended widely beyond the remit of a ‘classical’ musician.
Though I now live in St. Agnes, Cornwall with my husband and young son, I’ve come to realise that all of these artistic experiences influence my musical ethos in a profound way because I bring them all to my ‘musical table’, regardless of the wide variety of music genres that I perform.
Specialising in the tango flute music of Astor Piazzolla, I earned a Ph.D. at the University of Huddersfield, UK combining the fields of flute performance and ethnomusicology. This work was awarded the United States National Flute Association (NFA) Graduate Research Prize for the ‘most innovative new flute research’ in 2015. I hold further performance studies and degrees in flute and from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music (USA), the Royal Scottish Conservatoire, Glasgow and the Guildhall School of Music, London.
My pedagogical techniques for flute playing have been used in the UK’s Music Education Research Journal for further understanding of flute practice, and I have written articles for the British Flute Society (BFS) Journal, Pan, America’s Flute Talk Magazine and the International Flute Journal.
In 2019, along with running Boho Flute retreats, a holistic series of flute courses, the latest projects I am involved with include accepting a 4-year appointment to the National Flute Association’s ‘Academic Research Panel’ releasing a solo album of Astor Piazzolla’s music , and an ongoing recital calendar. I currently run an active flute studio —and thanks to Skype, teach students from around the globe.”
